Spriggan Powered is a 2D side-scrolling shoot ‘em up game released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo. What sets it apart is its use of pre-rendered graphics, similar to those used in Donkey Kong Country. Because it was released late in the console’s lifecycle, it was able to take full advantage of the Super Nintendo’s technical capabilities. It was the third game in the Spriggan franchise trilogy, though it has no connection to the previous titles.
Nemo is a platform game released for arcade in 1990. Don’t confuse it with the classic Pixar/Disney film Finding Nemo. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan is a 2D platformer released in 1990 for the Game Boy. The mission follows the classic storyline we know from the animated series: April O’Neil has been kidnapped by Shredder and Krang, while their henchmen try to prevent her rescue. You can choose one of the four heroes and travel through New York City until you reach the challenging Technodrome tower, where you’ll finally face the bosses and save the reporter.
Wacky Races is a 2D platformer game released in 1991 for Nintendo. Although it’s based on the classic cartoon series, oddly enough there are no actual racing stages. Muttley gets tired of being put in perilous situations during races with Dick Dastardly, so he decides to take charge this time to help his bumbling but loyal companion finally become the winner of the race.
The Shadow is a 1994 beat ‘em up game for the Super Nintendo. Its release was canceled due to the failure of the movie that inspired it. Lamont Cranston is a ruthless mysterious vigilante who dispenses justice on the streets of New York using physical combat, firearms, and his psychic powers.
Rayman 3 is a 2D platformer game released for Game Boy Advance in 2003. Globox, Rayman’s best friend, has put the world in danger. By devouring the terrifying black Lum, he has angered the Hoodlums, who plan to rescue their master at any cost. It’s up to Rayman to save the day and find a cure to free his friend from this curse.
Iron Commando: Koutetsu no Senshi is a beat ‘em up style game released for the Super Nintendo in 1995. The terrorist organization G.H.O.S.T. has stolen a radioactive meteorite to manufacture nuclear weapons. Chang Li and Jake must join forces to defeat the villains and recover the valuable material.
A Bug’s Life is a 2D platformer game unofficially released for Super Nintendo in 1998. It’s a port of the official Game Boy Color version with several visual improvements, but with several levels cut out. Flink begins his journey to save his ant colony from the oppression of Hopper, a cruel grasshopper, and his gang of bullies.
Kid Kool and the Quest for the Seven Wonder Herbs is a 2D platformer game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. The king is gravely ill and desperately needs special ingredients to create the medicine that will cure him. However, these ingredients can only be found in enemy territory. A young boy with extraordinary running and jumping abilities is called upon to undertake this mission, as he’s the only one capable of retrieving the herbs in under 3 days.
